How to Reduce the Risk of Online Horse Sale Scams

Practical checks for identities, photos, videos, payment requests, paperwork, and transport before sending money.
Online listings make it possible to find horses far beyond a local area, but distance also makes verification essential. Confirm the seller’s identity, speak by phone or video, and make sure the person receiving payment is connected to the horse and named in the agreement.
Ask for a current video that includes a simple detail chosen during your conversation, such as today’s date spoken at the start or a specific handling task. Search key listing phrases and use an image-search service to look for copied advertisements. Stolen photos often appear under different names and prices.
Be cautious when a seller creates unusual urgency, refuses an independent examination, avoids live communication, or changes payment instructions at the last moment. Verify wiring details through a known phone number before sending funds, and never rely only on instructions delivered by email.
Use a written agreement that identifies the horse, buyer, seller, price, deposit terms, and transportation responsibilities. Keep copies of the listing, health records, messages, receipts, and signed documents. Verification may slow the process, but legitimate transactions should not depend on secrecy or pressure.
