Questions to Ask Before Buying a Horse

A practical conversation guide covering training, temperament, health, handling, maintenance, and the horse’s current routine.

Begin with the horse’s recent routine. Ask how often the horse is ridden, by whom, in what setting, and what work it has done during the past several months. A horse’s current conditioning and consistency can shape the first weeks in a new home.

Ask specific questions about catching, tying, grooming, bathing, clipping, feet, loading, travel, turnout, and herd behavior. Under saddle, discuss transitions, brakes, steering, time off, unfamiliar environments, and any situations that require a more experienced rider.

Request veterinary and maintenance history, including known injuries, medications, injections, special shoeing, dental care, and feed needs. Arrange an independent pre-purchase examination suited to the horse’s intended job, understanding that an examination evaluates risk rather than promising the future.

Close with the transaction itself: what is included, how long a deposit holds the horse, when the balance is due, who arranges transport, and what the written exchange terms provide. Clear expectations should appear in the agreement before money changes hands.
